Film Studies Program

Advising for Majors and Minors

Advising for Majors:

You should first familiarize yourself with the requirements for the major.
If you are still considering whether you want to be a major and would like to discuss that with an advisor, please contact the Academic advisor, Kibby Smith.

Once you have decided that you want to major in Film Studies:

Once you have decided that you want to major in Film Studies, you should first familiarize yourself with and work through the graduation plan. Once you have done that, you should then schedule a meeting with Kibby Smith to go over the graduation plan and clear up any questions you have:

Step 1:  Work Through the Graduation Plan

1. You need to print out the two sides to the Film Studies Graduation Plan:

2. You then should go to the Film Studies Grad Plan Instructions page and follow these instructions in planning your 30 hours of courses in the major and completing the front side of the Graduation Plan.
Note: Only Regular, on-campus courses are accepted and counted toward the major, the Mizzou Online, self-paced coursed are not.

3. Next, you should fill out the back side for General Education Requirements, following the instructions given on the form. The following lists of typical courses used to fulfill General Education Requirements will help you in your planning.

University-wide General Education Requirements

Typical Courses to fulfill College of arts and Science Foundation Requirements
(for students starting college in Fall 2005 or LATER)

Typical Courses to fulfill College of arts and Science Foundation Requirements
Courses for students starting college PRIOR to Fall 2005

Comprehensive list of courses that fulfill General Education requirements

Courses to fulfill Writing Intensive requirement

Courses to fulfill Math Reasoning Proficiency Requirement

How to attain or apply for advanced placement credit or credit by exam

For additional information go to the College of Arts and Science Advising webpage

4. On the front and back sides of the form, you list the courses you plan to take as well as the ones you have already taken. What you may actually take will in the end almost certainly be different from those you list now. In other words, you are not committing yourself to have to take the courses listed on the Plan.

Step 2:  Meet with the Film Studies Academic Advisor

Once you have completed both sides of the form as well as you can, you should make an appointment to meet with the Academic Advisor, Kibby Smith:

Advising for the Minor:

You should first familiarize yourself with the requirements for the minor.
If you have any questions, you should e-mail the Film Studies advisor, Kibby Smith.

Once you have decided that you want to minor in Film Studies:

You need to print out the Minor in Film Studies form:

Fill out the form following the requirements for the minor. Those requirements stipulate the required courses for a normal program of study for the minor. However, note that the minor is a flexible and varied program that can be tailored to individual students’ needs. If you have a plan for 15 credit hours toward the minor that does not follow the prescribed curriculum, fill out the minor form accordingly and meet with Kibby Smith for approval.

Note: Only Regular, on-campus courses are accepted and counted toward the minor, the Mizzou Online, self-paced courses are not.

To indicate which courses you are taking for the Minor, check the courses you have taken or plan to take in the “Advising” column on the right, or write in the number, name and credit hours for any that are not listed on the form and put a check next to it in the advising column. You should have five checks in the column designating the fifteen hours toward the Minor. You list the courses you plan to take as well as the ones you have already taken. What you actually take may in the end be different from those you list now. In other words, you are not committing yourself to have to take the courses listed on the Plan.

Once you have completed the form, drop it off at the Academic Advisor's office (M110 SSC):

She will email you once it has been signed. You will then need to pick up the form and take it to the College of Arts & Science Advising Office in 107 Lowry Hall in order to officially declare your minor.
